Refinement of Ship’s Journal stages:
- Stage One: experiencing surroundings maybe as most do, not looking into things. (could look at Edgelands: Journeys into England’s True Wilderness)
- Stage Two: questioning why something is there, the story and function, being aware of context. Putting my psychogeographer’s hat on. (John Berger’s Ways of Seeing and a psychogeography book)
- Stage Three: experiencing surroundings with a psychogeographer’s perspective and knowledge. (Solnit’s Wanderlust)
- Stage Four: Mix of experience and stories. A representation to show what I’ve been up to (artwork).
Also, look at how Relationists break down barriers between the artist and the community — intervention.
Either treat Captain James Cook as in the past, or bring into today’s world, almost like summoning his ghost, having conversations and exchanging ideas, tips and techniques. I could think how he would’ve done things – would he have listened to local radio, or bought materials locally? Would he have gone on walks around his neighbourhood?
Really focus on material-side, adding an artist’s slant on localism. Look at Simon Starling and what Captain James Cook brought home. Also, the keepsakes from the Voyages art exhibition mentioned earlier.
